What Makes Our Approach Different
Every spay and neuter procedure at Oath Animal Hospital is built around one principle: the safest surgery is never one-size-fits-all.
That means your pet receives:
- Pre-operative bloodwork: We run lab work before every procedure to assess organ function and identify any risk factors before anesthesia is administered. Many low-cost clinics do not include this step.
- Pre-anesthetic physical exam: Your doctor examines your pet the morning of surgery, even if they saw your pet the day before because things can always change. If something doesn’t look right, we won’t proceed.
- Advanced continuous anesthetic monitoring: A dedicated team member monitors your pet’s vitals throughout the entire procedure using state-of-the art equipment. Your pet is never left unattended. Many low-cost clinics do not include this step.
- Comprehensive pain management: Your pet receives pain medication before, during, and after surgery. Recovery should be comfortable, not just survivable.
- Individualized patient care, start to finish: Our team knows your pet. Their history, their needs, and their recovery are part of an ongoing relationship – not a one-time transaction.
About the Procedures
Spaying (Female Pets)
Spaying involves the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus. We recommend the procedure between 6-9 months of age (per AAHA Guidelines) and ideally before the first heat cycle. When performed before first heat, spaying can reduce the risk of malignant mammary cancer by up to 90%. It also eliminates the risk of life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra), ovarian/uterine tumors, and removes heat cycles entirely.
Neutering (Male Pets)
Neutering involves the surgical removal of the testicles. Beyond preventing reproduction, neutering reduces roaming behavior, can lessen aggression, and eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease. Recovery is typically straightforward with minimal aftercare.
What to Expect
After lab results are reviewed and before surgery, your pet will receive a thorough physical exam. The procedure itself is performed under general anesthesia with continuous monitoring during and after the procedure. Most pets go home the same day and are back to themselves within a few days. Our team will follow up after your pet’s procedure, because our care doesn’t end when you walk out the door.
